TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES OF 2024

  1. Abigail – Just like with Renfield in 2023, this year also had an explosive, blood splattering vampire tale. This time it involved Dracula’s daughter and her twisted game of trapping unsuspecting criminals and playing her own version of Hide & Seek. I mostly enjoyed the variety of not-so-likable characters as well as the multiple twists all the way until the end.
  2. Speak No Evil – James McEvoy might just be the best actor over the last ten years. His portrayal of the psychotic β€œPaddy” was chilling from beginning to end. Even after the previews gave most of the movie away, they still managed to pull a few twists out that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
  3. Salem’s Lot – Strong remake of the Stephen King classic about a vampire who just moved to town and has turned all the townspeople into his army of the undead. Being almost five decades from its publication, this new film deviated from the novel several times but kept the soul of the story intact.Β
  4. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – After three and a half decades, we finally get a worthy sequel. Creepy and funny, this holds up to the original with a fresh new story with a good chunk of the original cast returning. And Jenna Ortega added to the cast because, well, you know, she’s in everything.
  5. Nosferatu – Perfect for fans of gothic horror, this retelling of Count Orlok is equal parts tragic and terrifying, as we watch the ancient vampire bringing the plague down as he searches for his bride. Lily Rose Depp was superb in the lead, and Bill Skarsgard once again nails the evil monster role.
  6. Late Night with the Devil – A documentary style film that chronicles a fictional late-night host from the 1970s who tries to push the boundaries to become the best in the business. Unfortunately, he goes too far by bringing on a possessed girl who creates chaos. The premise was fun, the characters were believable, and I enjoyed how it was filmed and presented.
  7. Smile 2 – I hated the ending to the original but decided to give the sequel a chance anyway. The plot was compelling, with this movie’s victim of the β€œsmile curse” being a famous music star trying to keep it together but starting to lose it the more the film progresses. Although I did predict the ending (again), it was still shocking to see and makes me wonder how they might continue the series.
  8. A Quiet Place Day 1 – Although not as great as the original, this prequel does a good job showcasing the monsters’ arrival and how the first group of people fought to survive and escape the carnage.
  9. Timecut – Similar to Totally Killer, this slasher centers around a teen going back in time in the hopes of saving her sister from an unknown serial killer. The twist at the end was different, albeit a little odd, even for time travel movie standards.
  10. MaXXXine – Third film in the X franchise with Maxine Minx trying to make it in Hollywood years after the massacre at the farm. The movie takes elements of 70s exploitation and 80s slasher to create a riveting film, although it does lack in the likable characters department.
