Emily Hodson

Since the curious age of seven, Emily has always been fascinated with creating stories. From picture books to short stories to full length novels, and even trilogies in the making. Growing up in Alaska inspired more ideas and wonders of “what if?” about things. Hodson moved to Portland, Oregon in 2013 but currently resides in Vancouver, Washington just across the bridge to get the best of both worlds. In her free time, she enjoys snuggling with her dog and cats, taking yoga and spin classes, reading, drawing, editing, and the most important thing she loves doing is writing.

Questions:

1. Tell our readers a little about yourself and your writing (including publications).
I’m originally from Alaska but have resided in the Pacific Northwest for a while now (Oregon and Washington.) I love being active indoors and outdoors with exercise but my biggest passion outside of that is writing, and recently doing voice recording work for my own book. I usually write eerie tense fiction books. Anything from scifi, some horror, thriller and fiction.

2. What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on wrapping up my second novel, Inject Me which is a duology of my first book, Medicate Me, a sci-fi psychological thriller.. I am also working on a separate novel called Friends Forever, a psychological crime thriller.

3. Are you a daytime writer, a mid-day writer, a nighttime writer, or just someone who writes when the mood hits you?
It’s really interesting. It seriously depends on my mood. I notice I write the best though in the mornings/afternoons at coffee shops around me. I like to change it up with the scenery around me.

4. Do you have a writing “Bucket List” (goals you want to accomplish as a writer)?
Hopefully write twenty books before I die. I don’t know why but twenty sounds like a sufficient and accomplished number of books to publish.

5. Who is your favorite author and why?
Riley Sager. I love the surprises he throws in his books. Very clever plot twists too.

6. Who/what first inspired you to write?
My mom gave me a pen and paper and told me to “write” when I was seven and bored in the car during a long-ish road trip. That’s how it started. In my fuzzy Scooby Doo notebook.

7. What are your favorite book genres?
Thriller, psychological, suspense and mystery.

8. Do you have any “rules” when you write? (EX for me: the dog never dies!)
I do not. It’s whatever comes to my mind and whatever makes sense in the plot.

9. Speaking of animals, do you have any pets?
I have 1 dog and 3 cats.

10. When you are in a writing funk, how do you find your way out?
I take a few weeks, maybe a month to “self-reflect.” Maybe a little social media cleanse. For some reason whenever I do that, I get back into the groove of things.

11. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a writer?
Don’t be too hard on yourself when you first start out. Find your community online or in person. Have realistic goals. Most importantly though, always have fun. That’s the main reason I love writing is because it’s fun. What’s even more fun is when my writing affects the people who read it in different ways.
