Alana K. Drex lives with her family and doggo in the middle of the United States. After Covid struck, she became more serious about writing and started focusing mainly on penning short stories. You can find her favorite, “Las Pulgas Vestidas,” written in a Stine/Pike style, in the anthology Curbside Curses. Drex hopes to publish her first short story collection this year—maybe even the two novellas that have been languishing halfway finished. But as many authors know, that will all depend on when the creative lightning strikes.

QUESTIONS:
1. Tell our readers a little about yourself and your writing (including publications).
I like to write horror and dark fiction. My debut was Sleeping Celeste in 2022, and it remains my most-selling book to date. I’m also planning a sequel to it. Shsskish, Fridge Goop, and Reunion are my other standalones. The Scampering and Oops, I Killed My Boyfriend are ones I co-wrote with A.W. Mason and Billy Ray Middleton Jr, respectively.
2. What writing projects are you currently working on?
I loved the movie Frankenhooker, but have wanted to tackle something like that but with a dynamic shift. What would it be like to have a pimpette versus a pimp? A gigolo versus a female prostitute? Thus, the idea for Frank’n’Gigolo was born.
The other main projects I’m working on is that sequel to Sleeping Celeste and a short story collection of my own.
3. Are you a daytime writer, a mid-day writer, a nighttime writer, or just someone who writes when the mood hits you?
Since my kids have programmed me to join the living during the early day, morning is when my mind is whirring. But also when the mood hits me.
4. Who is your favorite author and why?
My favorite author is Ronald Malfi, and I’m proud to say I discovered him long before I joined Bookstagram in 2021. Why is he my favorite author? His horror speaks to the heart while not holding back. I never catch the twists either!
5. What are your favorite book genres?
Horror, historical fiction, and quirky fiction.
6. What was the first horror movie you ever saw?
Does the IT miniseries count?
7. What is your favorite horror movie?
Silent Hill. Scream is close for pure nostalgia.
8. What is the worst horror movie you have ever seen?
Maybe that Pooh one that came out a few years ago. I couldn’t finish it, haha.
9. Do you have any pets?
I do. His name is Phantom and he looks like a little brown and white cow. The most stubborn and cute of all the little brown and white cows!
10. When you are in a writing funk, how do you find your way out?
When I’m in a writing funk, I find it’s because life is too serious, so I stop writing a while and read instead and before long I’m inspired at maybe a turn of phrase that makes me see things in a different or cool way and I’m bursting to write again.
