- Tell our readers a little about yourself and your writing (including publications).
Hi, I’m Andy – A.D Jones – a forty-something Indie author from the UK. I’m primarily a horror author, though I do veer into other lanes at times. I currently have six books of my own in the wild, as well as an anthology release with a variety of other indie authors. - What writing projects are you currently working on?
I have a Festive horror novella that is due for release at the end of this year, and I’m currently working through the first draft of a Folk horror meets fantasy, portal novel. - Are you a daytime writer, a mid-day writer, a nighttime writer, or just someone who writes when the mood hits you?
I find most of my writing does happen at night but will sometimes find the time in the afternoon. - Do you have a writing “Bucket List” (goals you want to accomplish as a writer)?
For me it is mostly just the enjoyment of getting the stories out of my head and into the hands of others so there aren’t any particular bucket list items for me. But I would love to eventually write a post-apocalypse story that I would be proud of. - Who is your favorite author and why?
Robert McCammon. I find his prose to be incredibly well written and the plot lines themselves to be fantastic. He has been a favourite author of mine for over twenty years, and even with the countless books I have read since, nothing has knocked him off that top spot. I would recommend Swan Song or Boys Life for anyone interested. - Who/what first inspired you to write?
I would imagine that a large amount of avid readers probably have at least the spark of wondering if they too could put something to the page and create their own novel. Having felt that way myself for a long time, I decided to take that leap and give it a shot. - What are your favorite book genres?
Horror has held my attention for my entire reading life, and will likely always be my favourite. But I also love dystopian/apocalyptic books, ‘raw’ grounded fantasy, and I have a soft spot for sad literary novels. - HORROR FANS (pick 1-3): What was the first horror movie you ever saw? What is your favorite horror movie? What is the worst horror movie you have ever seen?
1) The first horror movie I ever saw (at far too young an age) was the first Creepshow movie. The ‘something to tide you over’ segment of that movie will forever haunt me!
2) To some this is a controversial pick, but Event Horizon is my all-time favourite. The idea that being set in space making it Sci-Fi is nonsense!
3) The Blair Witch Project. I can appreciate amazing horror movies as well as the low budget b-movie horror offerings, but this, to me, offered neither. - Do you have any “rules” when you write? (EX for me: the dog never dies!)
I try to steer clear of SA elements within my writing, as I find, especially as a male author, it is too often used as a lazy shock include/story narrative and I think its comes across quite dismissive. - When you are in a writing funk, how do you find your way out?
I can honestly say I haven’t found the correct solution to that problem! I think forcing it is the worst idea though, and I will always walk away from the screen and give myself the space. Sometimes I find I need to just daydream some future story points and let them marinate in my head for a while before I go back to it. - Do you ever base any characters on yourself? Give specifics in your books if possible.
I put parts of myself into characters for sure, but never really to a point where I am writing myself. I do think the entire cast from my book Sacrificial Waters are an amalgamation of my entire personality. - What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a writer?
Don’t focus on writing well. Tell yourself the whole story and get that down on paper. Treat it like telling someone a story you made up, with its bare bones descriptions first. Once you have that framework you can then go back in and make it read how you would want it to for others.
