QUESTIONS:

1. Tell our readers a little about yourself and your writing (including publications).
Hello, I write under the penname Delliom Ellidom and am a spoonie—someone who deals with chronic pain and illness. I’ve always written, for as long as I can remember, and have mini “books” dating back to my elementary school days. Even then, I wrote a lot of fantasy and some darker tales, though the darker stories became more prevalent starting in my middle school years.

I’m a voracious reader who dabbles in almost any genre, which is reflected in my writing as well. Though I’ve mostly published fantasy works (romantasy, dark science fantasy, and paranormal/urban fantasy), I’ve also published poetry and a sardonic horror thriller.

2. What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on several projects, however my focus has been predominantly on a dark urban fantasy involving a dhampir (a mythological or fictional hybrid creature born from a vampire and a human) and witch. Aside from that, I have two collaborative projects I’ve been discussing with others and a novella. My larger projects are currently slow burn or placed aside until I finish one of the smaller projects.

3. Are you a daytime writer, a mid-day writer, a nighttime writer, or just someone who writes when the mood hits you?
I am absolutely a mood writer. I’ll write any time of day or night. On my laptop, desktop, phone, or with pen (pencil) and paper.

4. Do you have a writing “Bucket List” (goals you want to accomplish as a writer)?
Probably to have a book (any) sell two hundred copies. And to finish one particular project I’ve been working on for a bit.

5. Who is your favorite author and why?
My favorite author…it’s a toss-up between Vladimir Nabokov and Terry Pratchett. I read both when I was in high school, and I feel both influenced my writing style. Pratchett’s humor and Nabokov’s exploration of language drew me in, and they’re each elements that I’ve toyed with in my works.

6. Who/what first inspired you to write?
Honestly? I cannot remember. I’ve been writing since elementary school (probably before then), so I don’t think I can pinpoint any one thing or person. I will say, my parents have always been super supportive. So they helped keep me inspired.

7. What are your favorite book genres?
Though I’ll read almost anything, I do read a lot of fantasy and science fantasy books, as well as thrillers and psychological horror.

8. HORROR FANS: What was the first horror movie you ever saw? What is your favorite horror movie? What is the worst horror movie you have ever seen?
The first horror movie I can fully remember is either Gremlins or The Witches. My favorite horror movie is either The Silence of the Lambs, The Ring, or One Missed Call (original Japanese version). The worst horror movie I ever saw was The Forest (2016 Film).

9. Do you have any “rules” when you write? (EX for me: the dog never dies!)
I typically avoid animal death and abuse. If there is animal death (such as in the Deathling Library collection), it’s non-graphic and plot essential. I don’t like animal death or abuse as shock factor content.

10. Speaking of animals, do you have any pets?
I currently have eight furbabies! Half of them are seniors, the other half were all born in the same year of 2022!

11. When you are in a writing funk, how do you find your way out?
It really varies. Sometimes I just go on a reading binge. Other times I pick up old shows I love. Listen to music. Every so often, I just have to ride out that funk and let inspiration naturally hit.

12. Do you ever base any characters on yourself? Give specifics in your books if possible.
So far I haven’t based an entire character on myself, however I do give characters attributes or characteristics I have. I believe one of the characters who received the most “based on the author” right now is Vivica Muse from the Midnight Nocturne duology. There are many things about her that are her own. Yet I was able to explore my personal growth through her; learning the world isn’t so black and white, wondering how far I’d go to protect my family, and even figuring out how family and religious views can drive those actions—along with potential self-loathing or feelings of alienation when there is no self-loathing stemming from those actions.

13. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a writer?
Write! Find your own style, your own pace. Don’t even worry about “what needs to be in here that’s popular”? That’s for later drafts. Find inspiration. Also, read a lot. You cannot grow as a writer if you don’t read. Find reliable peers you can do peer reviews with. People you can talk shop with. Writing is meant to bring you joy. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s about your creations, you honing your craft. And with that: don’t use AI. That’s not you creating anything. That’s simply theft and laziness.
